N14 SR20 Hillclimb car

Thought I'd give a wee update. Season is finished and I won my class, 2nd in the newcomers and 9th overall in the highland speed championship. Had I entered the Scottish sprint championship I would have won my class in there too with my results.

The shopping list is shrinking too but so is the wallet

Already collecting bits for the winter rebuild. Plans are as follows

Gearbox
4.785 Mfactory FD Purchased - to be fitted
Cusco MZ 1.5way diff Purchased - to be fitted
Fidanza Flywheel Purchased - to be fitted

Engine parts in possession
Janspeed head
C3 Cams
Eagle rods
GtiR oil squirters
BC Springs

Engine shopping list
1mm oversized valves
titanium retainers
C6m cams and solid lifters (if theres enough left in the pot)
Bearings, seals and gaskets
VE oil pump
4cw crank (sourced) which needs lightened and balanced
ECU (looking like DTA S40 or 60)
Was hoping to have enough left over for a set of jenveys but I doubt it so probably have to settle for some bigger injectors for now.

Body
General tidy up, few bits need touching up Trying to convince the local college to use it as a project car for their bodywork classes
GRP wings to paint and fit Purchased - to be fitted
GRP Diffuser to fit Purchased - to be fitted
If time/money allows cut out the boot floor, remove fuel tank and fit a small tank and swirl pot. (unlikely to get done to be honest)

Rapidly shrinking budget is going to lead to a compromised engine spec for the next couple of years I think. I don't want to half arse something with the janspeed head, it needs to be done properly so I think I am going to stick with the current head and c3 cams for now. I have a set of 16ve pistons that will bump the compression up, I have eagle rods and a set of lightened stock rods, not sure which way I'm going to go yet. 4cw crank courtesy of Sam to be lightened and balanced, ve oil pump and new bearings, seals, water pump.

Should be enough left in the pot for some jenveys now. Still undecided on which ecu to go for, probably depend on the finances when it gets to that stage.

Managed to bag some willwood callipers and carriers so need to source some discs and ds2500 pads for them.

Also managed to source one of the 12 heated windscreens that were made to order for Tony Bardy and the gtiroc. Massive improvement on my shite kit car blower which will be getting discarded rather rapidly.

So to summarize:
  1. Rebuild Spare Gearbox
  2. Build up spare Block
  3. Remove engine, box and wiring from car
  4. Remove windscreen
  5. Remove front Wings
  6. Remove windows
  7. Try and convince someone to paint it for a ham sandwich and packet of crisps
  8. Remove head from current engine
  9. Put new engine together and fit to car
  10. Fit rebuilt gearbox
  11. Put all the windows back in and wire in new heated screen
  12. Refit any panels that were removed for painting
  13. Make up new minimalist loom for ECU
  14. Throw on the Jenveys that I haven't bought yet
  15. Give it to someone with more know how than me to get it all running the way it should.
Thats not including all the small jobs I want to do like making up tail light and headlight blanks, making up an airbox for the jenveys, installing small fuel tank, making up a flat boot floor, fitting diffuser etc etc etc etc

Going to be a busy winter.....

I might have Tomei solid lifters and Tomei S/R kit in my garage if you are interest by any chance?
Thanks for the offer but the budget is fairly stretched as it is so I'm not planning on doing anything to the head at the moment. I'll give you a shout if I have any cash left to play with though.

Cheers

Wee update...

Still haven't touched the car but have bought myself a few Christmas presents.

Jenvey 48mm ITB kit, DTA S40 ecu and splice kit, ve oil pump kit, new rings for the 16ve pistons, engine gasket set (minus head gasket), arb rod, head and main bolts, oil pump relocation kit and an oem timing kit. Still need a water pump, some bearings ong a head gasket but almost good to go.

Just need to start working on the bloody thing now!

Finger pulled out a wee bit.

Naked face. Wings off ready for new grp jobbies too.

Spare block stripped ready for honing and fitting oil squirters

Box of bits waiting to go off to get balanced. Fidanza flywheel, eagle rods, 16ve pistons and a 4cw crank. Just need to get the gearbox off the car and throw the clutch cover in the box too. Will be dropping these off next monday.

Lower oil pan off the spare block is a bit crusty and the one on the car has a nice dent on it so ordered a nice new one. Budget sadly won't extend to dry sump yet.

Very nice. I like the way this is going. Spurs me on to get down the shed. What costs have you had for balancing the rotating assembly?

Yes and yes. Not sure what I'm going to do with the head though as i had it measured and its more than 2mm shorter than a standard highport head so compression with even flat tops would be to high for pump fuel. I know someone on here ran it with a thick hg but if i use it I wouldnt go that way. I'm thinking of having the headwork copied onto a standard head and using it with this setup then selling on the janspeed head. Wont be until at least the summer though as there isn't much left in the pot and i still need to get the thing up and running with this setup.
