The Turtle

last night the gearbox mount was fabricated up. we removed the Gearbox mount form the Almera.

Almera GA14 mount is the one with the odd angle and the Micra mount is the relatively straight one.

So the Almera mount was used due to it being beefier than the Micra one as you can see,

The Almera mount was cut up, The section with the bolt holes was grinding off and offered up to the mount holes on the gearbox. Unfortunately 2 of the 3 holes lined up, but one was a few mm out so the bolt wouldn't go in.... Back to the drawing board (or whiteboard in this case).

This cut section was then used as a template to make a mount from 5mm thick steel. The steel was cut and the holes on the original mount were drilled through onto the steel and with a dremel, the offending small hole was bored out so it could be bolted up.

Once bolted up to the gearbox, the rubber mount and metal holder was cut from the remaining bracket and grinded down to fit into the current micra mount on the chassis. Once this was done, another piece of steel was cut and positioned using magnetic clamps. It was tac welded into place and then removed from the car to be properly welded.

The mount was then giving some extra bracing for strength and fully welded up then bolted back onto the gearbox.
Then slotted a bolt through the mount and chassis and tightened up.

End product of the mount :

Its quite close to the clutch arm, so this may need to be rectified later on once a clutch cable has been fitted

Which resulted in this :

The engine is now sitting in place on its own, no engine hoist, nothing.

So 2 mounts down, 2 to go. The next 2 shouldn't be too hard

yes liam, the welds look shit!

Smashing project, got this one boomarked and look forward to the updates

Awesome guys! Progress happening quickly here! Will it be ready for japfest? and dont worry, im not gonna comment on your shit welding again, as mine is just as bad! :)

nah it wont be ready, if it is, it wont be travelling that far lol. it'll be knockhill or crail and getting its SR20'd titties ragged off.

my brother hopes to bring it to JAE though if it is ready (better be) and he has passed his test (better have)

Going to be a bit of a headache wiring it up, I really wish i had the know how or space to have a stab at something like this, its going to be a proper little weapon when shes done!

the wiring is almost all done.

i counted 21 wires i have to splice.

basically we ripped out every stitch of wiring in front of the seats and replaced it with the full loom out of the GX.

this means all we have to splice are the rear lights and the fuel pump wires, and the SR20 and its loom is plug and play.

forget trying to build a custom loom that all these try and fail fannies on MSC do...

our intake doesnt stick out so far that way so i think we should be fine.

i might replace the pot if i can with a skinnier almera one

other thing i forgot to ask. what did you do for a water pump belt?

We no longer had power steering, so used an idler pulley from the stock CG10DE engine and fabricated a bracket and adjuster.

Then we simply measured what size of belt we needed roughly and then adjusted it accordingly.

You'd be best to do it while the engine was on the floor, as it makes it for easier access!

mine,s been running ok without an idler for a few years ross, if thats an option ?

and i,ve been running without a front mount for ages also lol, if thats an option too

We're not going to be running power steering either so looks like a little extra fabrication will be required.

Got goodies arriving tomorrow hopefully so stay tuned for another update.

Im really looking forward to this project being on the track/road, Miles would be so proud of his SR20 :) i also found out the other day guys that that engine has been rebuilt at around 95k is and its only on 112k but in truth i dont know for cirtain or have any proof of this but thought you might like to know :D hope it carries on going smoothly for you :D
